Listen Live

Listen Live puts a Listen Live button next to the radios you choose on your public station page. Anyone visiting your page can click it to hear what that radio is receiving, right in their browser. They don't need an account. It's included with the Shack and Super Station plans.

Listeners hear receive audio and see the S-meter. They can't tune, change anything, or transmit: the shack computer never acts on anything a listener's browser sends. They see the frequency (or only the band) the same way your page already shows it.

Turning it on

  1. Sign in at remotemyshack.com, open your Account page and the Public page tab.
  2. Tick Show what my radios are doing. Listen Live sits with your radios on the page, so it needs them shown.
  3. Under Listen Live, tick Let visitors listen to each radio you want to share. Your station needs to be online for its radios to be listed.
  4. Click Save.

The button only appears while the radio is connected and turned on, and only for radios your plan covers. To stop sharing a radio, untick it and save.

The agent at your shack needs to be version 1.0.88 or later. Older agents never get listeners; the button just doesn't appear.

What listeners get

  • The radio's receive audio, compressed to about 24 kb/s (around 11 MB an hour), so it plays well on a phone.
  • The S-meter, updated twice a second, and Transmitting while you're on the air.
  • Up to 30 minutes at a time. After that, or if you end it, their page says listening has ended and offers Listen again.

Up to 10 people can listen at once. Listeners have their own places, so they never use up the console places you need to operate.

Seeing and ending listeners

While anyone is listening, the top of your console shows 1 listening (or however many). Click End next to it to end every listening session straight away. Your console and anyone else operating aren't affected. Visitors can start listening again unless you also untick the radio on the Public page tab.

Things to know

  • Listeners use your shack's upload: about 24 kb/s each, so 10 listeners use about a quarter of a megabit a second.
  • One address can start listening a limited number of times an hour, to keep anyone from hammering your station.
  • Browsers that can't decode compressed audio get uncompressed audio instead, at about 256 kb/s.
